Watermelon begins with rough, lobed leaves, a small yellow flower, and a divided tendril reaching for support. The fruit is familiar enough to hide that beginning. Start identification with the plant, not the fruit. Watermelon is a trailing annual vine. Its leaves are broad, deeply lobed, and often rough with hairs. Yellow flowers sit along the stems, and forked tendrils give the plant a reaching, exploratory look. Other cucurbit vines can share some of these clues, so take a photograph of the whole plant and then add one close view of a flower or tendril.
In Africa, Kew describes Watermelon in grassland and bushland, mostly on sandy soils and often near watercourses. That pairing of dry ground and nearby water helps explain the plant’s character. Its roots work in soil that drains quickly, while trailing stems spread across the surface and leaves cast small patches of shade. As leaves age and fall, they join the litter layer that insects, fungi, rain, and roots keep remaking.
