When the stem becomes the canteen

A Firesticks plant can make a strange first impression: a bundle of green or ember-colored pencils, all reaching from one woody base. The stems look bare because the leaves are small and quick to drop, but they are doing the work leaves usually do. Firesticks stores water in its slender stems, so the branches keep working through dry spells even after the tiny leaves have dropped. 2

Its stems are the plant’s canteens: they hold water when there is little rain. The familiar Firesticks name is often applied to colorful forms of Euphorbia tirucalli, a succulent shrub or small tree in the spurge family. It is not a true cactus, despite the common pencil cactus nickname. Look for smooth, cylindrical branchlets that fork into a loose thicket. New tips may carry narrow leaves, but older sections can be almost leafless. Tiny yellow flower clusters occur at the tips, though the branch pattern is usually a better clue. 1 2

The plant is built for dry ground. NC State describes it as thriving in well-drained, relatively low-organic soil, and the water stored in its stems helps explain why it can remain green when a thin surface layer dries. Under a branching shrub, fallen tips and the few shed leaves become part of the litter at the soil surface. That is a small contribution, not a claim that the plant makes rich soil. Its real talent is endurance above ground: a living scaffold that holds moisture in the stems. Compare that with Caucasian stonecrop, whose low, fleshy leaves make the reserve much easier to see.

Kew lists the species as native to Madagascar and introduced across many warm regions. That long travel history matters when you meet it near a house, path, or planted boundary.
