At first glance, Crimson Bottlebrush can look like a red brush caught on the end of a leafy stem. Look closer. The red brush is not a single flower: it is a crowd of small flowers holding out long stamens, the pollen-bearing threads that do most of the visual work. That crowded structure is the plant’s opening move, bright enough to turn a shrub into a signal.

The first community record behind this page came from Mystic-Helper in California on July 5, 2026. That is a record of one observed plant, not evidence that California is the species’ wild home. Plants of the World Online places the accepted Melaleuca citrina in Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria, while also listing a separate set of introduced regions.1 The older name Callistemon citrinus still appears in floras and image labels, so both names are useful when you are checking a plant carefully.

Recognition asks for more than a red flower. VicFlora describes a stiff shrub with narrow, pointed leaves, bright red spikes, and small woody capsules that remain on the stem after flowering.2 Those little seed cups matter. A bottlebrush spike can be dazzling from across a path, but leaves and old capsules help the name hold up when the flowers have faded.
