One white head on a stem
The familiar cottony look comes after flowering, when pale bristles surround the tiny fruit and spread into a compact white head.

Common cottongrass
Usually several heads and a looser look. Common cottongrass, Eriophorum angustifolium, often carries several cottony heads on a stem. This species is known for the single conspicuous head above a dense tussock.
Sea club-rush

The bog tuft that lets its seeds become weather
A dense green tuft rises from wet ground, and above it a white brush catches the light. From a few steps away, the head can look like a scrap of cloud caught on a stem. It is not a flower petal at all. Cottongrass makes a cloud from bristles, then anchors it in peat. The bristles surround tiny fruits, turning a compact bog sedge into something that seems ready to drift away.2
The name cottongrass is a little misleading, because Eriophorum vaginatum is a sedge, not a grass and not a cotton plant. Its close-up clue is the white head held above a tight tussock, a raised clump of stems and leaves. The first community record behind this page came from Lower Silesian Voivodeship in Poland on July 4, 2026. That setting fits part of a much wider northern story: Kew lists the species across cool North American, European, and Asian regions.1
What looks weightless above ground depends on heavy, waterlogged ground below. Tussock cottongrass commonly grows in acidic, nutrient-poor, poorly drained organic soil. In a bog, dead plant material decays slowly and builds peat over a very long time. Roots, old leaf bases, mosses, and wet soil become part of the same crowded surface. The plant does not make a dry meadow out of that place. It helps mark a habitat where water stays close and the ground holds a long memory of previous seasons.23
This is also why the tuft matters. In northern peatlands, cottongrass can grow with peat mosses, low shrubs, lichens, and other sedges. Each tussock makes a small rise above the wetter spaces between. A sea club-rush offers another look at how sedges organize a wet place, though its dark compact heads are nothing like cottongrass’s white brushes. At a water’s edge, yellow water-lily tells a different story again, floating where cottongrass needs saturated peat rather than open water.
The white display is the plant’s most repeatable surprise. The white cotton is made of bristles around tiny fruits, so a bog tussock can turn its seed crop into a wind-carried cloud. When the head loosens, those pale bristles give the seed a much larger shape to catch the air. The effect is soft and theatrical, but the work is practical: a small fruit is getting a chance to leave its parent tuft.2
One useful comparison is common cottongrass, Eriophorum angustifolium. It often carries several cottony heads on a stem, while E. vaginatum is known for a single prominent head above a dense tussock. Do not rely on white alone. Look at how many heads rise from each stem, then step back and take in the clump, the moss, and the wetness underfoot. A photograph that includes both one head and the whole setting will tell a much fuller story than the white brush by itself.
Pause with that contradiction: the part that looks most like weather is attached to a plant built for stubborn ground. Notice the dark green tuft below the white, the wet peat or moss around it, and the other low plants sharing the surface. Cottongrass is easy to remember as a cloud, but it is more interesting as a small peatland resident making its future seeds light enough to travel.

Cottongrass belongs to peatlands where water, moss, and slow-decaying plant material make the ground feel springy and patient.
A sedge for wet acidic peat
Tussock cottongrass commonly grows in acidic, nutrient-poor, poorly drained organic soils. Its roots work through peat, while its old leaves and stems join the slowly changing plant layer on the bog surface.23
