That is the quickest way to meet corkscrew willow, Salix matsudana ‘Tortuosa’. In leaf, the tree carries narrow green blades, but winter is when its character comes forward. The Royal Horticultural Society describes a fast-growing, deciduous tree with strongly contorted branches and shoots. Oregon State likewise notes that the corkscrew effect is clearest after leaf fall. A whole-tree view matters here. One curly twig can occur on other willows, while a repeated crown of upright twists is the better clue.

The contrast with a weeping willow is useful. A weeping willow lets its branchlets spill downward in a curtain. Corkscrew willow holds many branches upward and outward first, then puts a turn into them. Look for simple, narrow leaves with fine teeth in the growing season. In winter, stand far enough back to read the silhouette, then walk closer to see whether the bends recur along the twigs.

The name is a garden name as much as a field name. This is a selected ornamental form connected with Chinese willow, rather than a separate wild species with one simple native outline. Kew’s plant record treats the accepted form as a cultigen, a plant shape carried forward by cultivation, and lists introduced regions that the map separates from reported observations. Those dots are records of where people have reported it, not a promise that every dot marks a natural wild population.

The curl is not only a winter curiosity. The same young branches are valued in floral arrangements, which explains why the tree appears in yards, gardens, and cutting landscapes far from its original botanical setting. Its fast growth can make the architecture feel almost improvised, as if a branch is drawing its route in real time. Balsam poplar offers another useful comparison: it is also a fast-growing deciduous tree connected with moist settings, but its outline is broad and straight rather than tightly coiled.

Under the tree, the story is quieter. Horticultural references describe corkscrew willow as suited to moist, deep soil across several soil textures. In autumn its narrow leaves and small fallen twigs become part of the surface litter. That litter does not turn a cultivated tree into a wild ecosystem by itself, but it is still the seasonal material that meets fungi, small invertebrates, moisture, and roots at ground level. The tree’s soil relationship is easiest to notice after rain, when fallen leaves catch in shallow hollows and the branch pattern overhead seems to echo the lines below.

On a walk, make the identification slowly. Photograph the whole crown, a close branch, and the leaf if one is present. Notice whether the ground is moist or near water, then compare the branch direction with a truly weeping willow. Monterey pine makes the opposite sort of comparison: its evergreen needles keep a dense outline year-round, while corkscrew willow reveals its most memorable mark when the leaves are gone.

By late winter, a corkscrew willow can look like it has been sketched into the sky with one restless hand. That shape is not a decoration added to an ordinary willow. It is the field mark that lets the tree tell its own story from across a quiet path.
