Use leaf shape, flowers, setting, and regional context together. Garden plants are often named coral bells too, but may be hybrids or other Heuchera species.

Look for simple leaves held in a low cluster, with teeth and lobes rather than separate leaflets.

In summer, slender stems rise above the leaves with small pale green-white flowers in a loose display.

Forests, forest borders, and rich partly shaded ground provide a more useful clue than leaf color alone.

A close relative or a garden hybrid can share the broad outline. Compare the whole plant and its setting before settling on a name.

Foamflower

Check the flower cluster and leaf cuts. Foamflower can share a shaded woodland setting and lobed leaves. Native Plant Trust notes that its leaves are often more deeply cut, while its flower cluster differs from H. americana.

Garden coral bells

Do not rely on foliage color. Many named garden selections belong to Heuchera or its hybrids. Their colors can be striking, but a cultivar label is not evidence for a wild species identification.

The story

A small bell tower in the woodland shade

A wiry flower stem rises out of a low cluster of lobed leaves and hangs its small pale bells in the light. The leaves keep close to the soil; the flowers do the announcing. That is a good first way to meet Coral Bells, Heuchera americana, also called American alumroot. A small woodland perennial can become a visible signal simply by sending a light, airy flower wand above the shade.

The name needs a little care. “Coral bells” is used for many Heuchera plants in gardens, including cultivated selections and hybrids. H. americana is one wild species within that larger family of familiar foliage plants. Its leaves may be lobed and toothed, and Native Plant Trust describes small green-white flowers in mid-summer. The first useful question is not “Which leaf color is it?” but “What whole plant am I seeing, and where is it growing?” Forest edge, woodland bank, rich shade, and flower structure all matter.

That caution makes an easy connection to Mapleleaf Alumroot, another Heuchera whose leaves hold close to shaded ground. They share a family resemblance, but they are not interchangeable. Look at the leaf outline, hairs, flower stems, local range, and the plant’s setting. A bright nursery color can be beautiful without being a reliable wild-species field mark.

Kew recognizes Heuchera americana as native from southeastern Canada into central and eastern parts of the United States. The range is broad enough to reward a regional check, yet the plant’s immediate world is small: rich soil, partial shade, and the litter at a forest edge. Those fallen leaves, small twigs, and damp pockets are not scenery. They are the surface layer where roots, moisture, and small animals meet. Coral Bells can lift tiny nectar bells above a low leafy mound, turning a quiet patch of shade into a small signal tower.

The first public record behind this page came from Missouri in July 2026. Its location is shown only at a broad scale. In the field, a better record is a patient set of photographs: the whole mound, one leaf from above, one leaf edge, and the flower wand. A single close-up can suggest the genus; the full set makes it easier to compare what you saw later without pretending that every colorful garden plant is the same species.

Foamflower is one useful comparison. It can grow in similarly shaded woodland places and also has lobed leaves, but the flower cluster and leaf cuts give a different overall impression. Wild sarsaparilla offers another woodland-ground comparison: its leaves are arranged in a much larger, more divided display, not a compact Heuchera mound. These are not shortcuts to a name. They are reasons to slow down and notice repeated details.

The garden history is part of the story, too. Many cultivated coral bells make their leaf colors a main attraction, and the species has helped make the name familiar. The wild plant does something quieter. It holds its foliage in the understory and then puts a delicate flowering structure into the open air above it. That change in height is small, but it changes who can notice the plant.

On your next woodland-edge walk, kneel rather than reaching first. Notice the soil: is it rich and leaf-covered, rocky, dry, or damp? Follow one stem from the leaves to the flowers. Then look beyond the plant for the larger shade community around it. A Coral Bells plant does not need to be loud to be memorable. Its tiny bells are enough to make the ground layer look up.

Common alumroot is described for rich soil in partly shaded forest and forest-edge places. Its leaf mound meets the litter layer and roots at the ground surface, where moisture and organic material shape the small habitat around it.2
