Leafari Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 28, 2025
1. Introduction
Welcome to Leafari! This Privacy Policy explains how LaunchTap LLC ("we," "our," or "us") collects, uses, shares, and protects information in relation to our mobile application, Leafari (the "Services"). Your privacy is critically important to us, and this policy is designed to help you understand your rights and our responsibilities.
By using our Services, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. This policy should be read in conjunction with our Terms of Service.
2. Information We Collect
We collect information to provide and improve our Services. The types of information we collect are:
a. Information You Provide Directly
- Account Information: When you create an account, we may collect a username and other information necessary for account setup. We do not require your real name or email for a basic account.
- User Content (Photos): The core of our service involves you uploading photographs of plants for identification. These images are User Content. Camera and photo-library access are requested solely so you can capture, upload, and manage these plant photos; we do not access your media for any other purpose.
- Communications: If you contact us for support or provide feedback, we will collect the information you include in your message.
b. Information We Collect Automatically
- Usage and Activity Data: We collect information about your interactions with the Services, such as which plants you identify, badges you earn, points you accumulate, and your activity on leaderboards or challenges.
- Device Information: We collect information about the mobile device you use to access our Services, including the hardware model, operating system and version, and unique device identifiers.
- Location Information: With your explicit permission, we may collect your device's precise location to help you tag where you discovered a plant. You can disable location services at any time in your device settings.
- Push-Notification Tokens: If you enable notifications, we collect a device token from Apple Push Notification service (APNs) so we can send opt-in alerts (e.g., badge completions or challenge reminders). Tokens are not used for advertising and can be disabled in iOS Settings.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect for the following purposes:
- To Provide and Maintain the Service: To operate the core plant identification features, manage your account, and display your collection journal.
- To Improve and Personalize the Service: To understand how our users interact with Leafari, develop new features, and personalize your experience (e.g., suggesting local challenges).
- For Security and Moderation: To protect the safety and security of our users and to enforce our Terms of Service, including moderating User Content.
- To Communicate with You: To respond to your support requests or feedback.
- Analytics & Diagnostics: We use Apple App Analytics and basic Convex logging to collect aggregated, de-identified usage statistics and crash diagnostics. We do not track you across apps or websites for advertising purposes.
4. How We Share Your Information
We do not sell your personal information. We only share it with third parties in the following circumstances:
a. With Third-Party Service Providers
We work with trusted third-party partners to operate and improve our Services. These partners are bound by strict confidentiality agreements and only have access to the information necessary to perform their functions. Our key partners include:
- Convex: Our backend platform provider, which hosts our database, functions, and file storage.
- OpenRouter & OpenAI: Our AI service providers. To identify a plant, we send the uploaded photograph to them for analysis. To generate a plant badge, we send a text prompt based on the identified plant. These providers process the data to return the identification and generated image to us.
b. For Legal Reasons
We may disclose your information if required to do so by law or in the good faith belief that such action is necessary to comply with a legal obligation, protect our rights or property, or ensure the personal safety of our users or the public.
c. Aggregated or De-Identified Data
We may share aggregated or de-identified information, which cannot reasonably be used to identify you, for research, marketing, or analytics purposes.
d. Community & Public Display (Opt-in)
With your explicit in-app opt-in, we may display your uploaded plant photo, identification result, and username on public leaderboards, our website, or social-media channels to showcase community discoveries. You can withdraw this permission at any time from the in-app settings; once withdrawn, we will cease using the content in new public materials.
5. Children's Privacy
We are committed to protecting the privacy of children. Our Services are designed for all ages, but we handle information for users under 13 with special care, in compliance with the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
- Parental Consent: We require a parent or legal guardian to provide verifiable consent before we collect any personal information from a child under 13.
- Information Collected: We only collect information that is reasonably necessary for a child to participate in the app's activities, such as photos for identification and usage data for gameplay.
- Parental Rights: Parents and guardians have the right to review the personal information we have collected from their child, request its deletion, and refuse to allow any further collection or use of their child's information. To exercise these rights, please contact us at the email below.
6. Your Rights and Choices
You have rights and choices regarding your information:
- Access and Update: You can review and update your account information through the app's settings.
- Data Deletion: You have the right to request the deletion of your account and associated personal information. You can initiate a deletion request from within the app's settings or by contacting us. We will process your request in accordance with applicable law.
- Permissions: You can manage location permissions and push notification preferences through your device's settings.
- Communications: You can opt-out of receiving non-essential communications from us.
7. Data Security and Retention
- Security: We take reasonable measures to protect your information from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. We leverage the security infrastructure of our backend provider, Convex, to safeguard your data.
- International Transfers: Your information is processed in the United States and may be transferred to—and maintained on—servers located outside your jurisdiction. We take appropriate measures to ensure an adequate level of data protection.
- Retention: We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you with the Services. We may retain information for a longer period if required for legal or operational purposes.
8. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you by posting the new policy in the app and updating the "Last updated" date. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
