Getting started & identifications
5 articlesHow does Leafari identify a plant or bug?
Point your camera at any plant or bug and snap a photo. Leafari's AI compares it against a library of thousands of species and returns the most likely match in seconds — usually with the common name, the scientific name, and a little story about it. Clear, close, well-lit photos give the best results.
Is Leafari free?
Yes. Leafari is free to download and use. The free plan includes a generous number of identifications each day, plus badges, streaks, and your personal field journal. If you want unlimited IDs and a few extras, Premium is an optional in-app upgrade.
What's the difference between free and Premium?
Free gives you a daily identification limit, all your badges, streaks, weekly challenges, and your full journal. Premium removes the daily limit (unlimited identifications), unlocks exclusive member-only badge art, and helps support the mission. Everything you've collected on free stays yours, with or without Premium.
Does Leafari identify both plants and bugs?
It does — from the weed in the sidewalk crack to the beetle on your boot. Leafari is built to recognize a wide range of plants and insects. Fungi, animals, and other groups aren't supported yet, but we're always growing the library.
Why was my plant misidentified?
AI identification is very good but not perfect — look-alike species, blurry photos, odd angles, or poor lighting can throw it off. Try again with a sharper, closer photo of a distinctive feature (a flower, a leaf, the whole insect). On many results you'll also see alternate matches to choose from, and you can flag a wrong ID to help us improve.
Badges, points & streaks
3 articlesHow are badges earned?
Every new species you identify earns a one-of-a-kind collectible badge for your journal. The rarer the find, the rarer the badge — common, uncommon, rare, and legendary. You also earn points for each discovery, which add up as you explore.
How do streaks work?
Make at least one identification on a given day and your streak grows by one. Miss a day and it resets — it's a gentle nudge to step outside and notice something new. Streaks are about the habit, not the pressure, so don't sweat the occasional rainy day.
What are weekly challenges?
Each week brings a fresh theme — like "find three yellow flowers" or "spot a pollinator" — to send you hunting for something specific. Completing a challenge earns bonus points and sometimes special badges. New challenges drop automatically, so there's always a reason to look closer.
Account, privacy & troubleshooting
5 articlesCan my kid use Leafari safely?
Yes — Leafari is designed for the whole family, ages 8 and up. There are no ads, no chat with strangers, and your photos are never shown to other people. We're privacy-first by design and built with children's privacy rules like COPPA in mind, so kids can explore the living world safely.
How do I delete my account or data?
Open Settings → Account → Delete account, and we'll permanently remove your profile, identifications, and journal. You can also request a copy of your data from the same screen. Prefer to ask a human? Email support@leafari.app and we'll take care of it.
How do I manage location & notifications?
You're always in control. Head to Settings → Privacy to turn location on or off (it helps tag where you found things, but it's optional), and Settings → Notifications to choose what you hear about — streak reminders, weekly challenges, or nothing at all. On the map, locations are approximate and delayed for everyone's safety.
Does Leafari work offline?
Identification needs an internet connection, since the AI runs in the cloud. But you can still browse your saved journal and badges offline, and on a shaky signal Leafari will sync your new finds once you're back online.
What devices are supported?
Leafari runs on iPhone and Android phones and tablets — grab it from the App Store or Google Play. We support recent versions of iOS and Android; if the app won't install, make sure your device software is up to date. Having trouble on a specific device? Let us know at support@leafari.app.
